Australia set themselves on course for a title clash with Pakistan swamping South Africa 8-3 while hosts Malaysia were drubbed by New Zealand 1-3 in the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here today.

Olympic champions Australia, who led 5-1 at the break, scored through Jamie Dwyer (2) and El Matheson, Robert Hammond, Travis Brooks, Michael Mccann, Grant Schubert and Brent Livermore to down South Africa.

The South African goal-getters were Emile Smith, John McInroy and Ricky Gay. The Aussies, unbeaten in the competition so far but have split points in drawn fixtures against South Korea and Pakistan, played with a gameplan focusing on scoring as many goals.

New Zealand triumphed over hosts Malaysia and moved into the joint third position alongside Korea in the seven-nation competition. They took the lead in the second minute therough Philips Burrows as Malaysia found the equaliser in the 43rd minute from a penalty corner as skipper Kuhan Shanmuganathan made no mistake.

New Zealand took the lead again in the 50th minute from an indirect penalty corner conversion by David Kosoof.

They put the issue beyond doubt when scoring their third goal in the 55th minute after Bryce Collin beat goalkeeper Jamaluddin from the edge of the circle.
