Electing to bat first after captain Steve Waugh won the toss at Port of Spain, Australia reached 113 for two at lunch on Day One of their second Test against West Indies. Openers Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden got Australia off to a fine start, but their promising-looking partnership was nipped in the bud by a contentious decision by Sri Lankan umpire Asoka De Silva. De Silva first gave Langer out leg before off Mervyn Dillon for 25 when the ball had pitched a shade outside the leg stump. The umpire repeated the mistake against Hayden off the same bowler a few overs later with the batsman on 30. Once again, the ball had clearly pitched six inches outside the leg line.

At the break, captain Ricky Ponting and Darren Lehmann were unbeaten on 24 and 32 respectively. Dillon, the only successful West Indian bowler, returned figures of two for 25 off his eight overs. The Aussies are already one up in the four-Test series, having won the first by a big margin in Georgetown last week.
