Atwal tees off in Miccosukee Championship

Currently placed at the 57th slot, Arjun Atwal will tee off at the Miccosukee Championship hoping to maintain his place in the top 60.

.

Perched at the 57th slot on the Money Leaders list, an off-colour Arjun Atwal would tee off at the USD 575,000 Miccosukee Championship hoping to maintain his place inside the top 60 to qualify for next week’s Nationwide Tour Championship at Barona Creek.

Atwal has seen more downs than ups this season and the Orlando-based Indian’s hope to secure the 2008 PGA Tour card hinges on his performance in the next two events.

After the completion of the Miccosukee Championship, those ensconced in the top 60 in the money list would qualify for the next week’s finale, the Nationwide Tour Championship at Barona Creek.

And each of them, including Atwal, would do virtually anything to finish inside top 25 on the money list and pocket their 2008 PGA Tour card.

Players who finish 26-60 on the list are ensured a spot on the Nationwide Tour in 2008.

Atwal, the first Indian member of the PGA Tour, has been drawn with Lee Rinker and Mario Tiziani to play the first round.

Atwal’s best show this year has been the tied 21st finish at the Frys.com Open and he ranks tied 66th in consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour.

On the 2007 Nationwide Tour, Atwal had 15 starts and made cut in 10 with two top 10 and seven top 25 finishes.

His PGA Tour performance has been less impressive with the Indian making cuts in half of the 12 events he played in with just one top 25 finish.
