Arjun Atwal left himself a lot of work to do as he went three over on the first day of the $6 million Wachovia Championship in North Carolina.
The leader was Sergio Garcia, who played exceedingly well for his round of six-under 66 to take a two-shot lead. He was still not too happy, as he missed a few other makeable putts, which could have seen him go even lower. He was leading by two over defending champion Joey Sindelar, Kenny Pery, Patrick Sheehan and Richard Johnson.
Tiger Woods shot a two-under 70, after being two-over after five. Starting on the tenth, he finished with back-to-back birdies, including a 40-footer on the ninth hole.
Atwal, starting on the tenth, had a birdie on the 11th but gave away that shot on the very next hole. He then parred the next nine holes, till the third on the front nine, which is his second nine. Then came the bogey streak, as he bogeyed the fourth, fifth and sixth and only parred the rest to end at three-over. His putting in particular was awry as he took 31 putts to finish the round.
Daniel Chopra was in a situation similar to that of Atwal after shooting a 75. Chopra had an eventful round, as he parred the first three holes and then double bogeyed the fourth.
The projected cut is two-over and both Atwal and Chopra will need to shoot under par to rise up in the standings.
