Union Minister of State Ajay Maken on Sunday demanded that the killing of Laxmanananda Saraswati and the communal violence that followed be probed by the CBI. The Congress general secretary in-charge of Orissa also accused Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of being insincere about restoring peace in Kandhamal.

Maken, who led a huge peace rally of Congress at Baliguda area of Kandhamal district, said the Government could have provided security to Laxmanananda as demanded by him, but did not do so. He alleged that people in Kandhamal were still scared despite the lifting of curfew.

Maken said only a CBI probe would unravel the truth behind the killing and the subsequent violence. Along with Maken, former Union minister Bhakta Charan Das, state PCC president Jaydev Jena, former Union minister Srikant Jena and other senior Congress leaders took part in the rally. The rallyists carried placards with peace messages written on them. The Congress leaders also demanded resignation of Naveen Patnaik.
