India today said the issue of Sarabjit Singh, sentenced to death in Pakistan, is expected to be raised by PM Manmohan Singh with President Pervez Musharraf when they meet in New York on September 14.

‘‘I hope the issue will be discussed when the PM meets President Musharraf on September 14,” External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh said.

Asked on Musharraf’s remarks on Sarabjit that he was involved in terrorist acts, he said: ‘‘We have told them (Pakistan) that he is an Indian national and sentiments are attached to the issue.” But Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur reacted sharply to Musharraf’s remarks. ‘‘I think the government has not taken up the case seriously with Pakistan, otherwise there is no need for such a statement on part of Islamabad,’’ she said.

Meanwhile, Musharraf has said that he was “a man of compassion” and would take a decision after looking into the legal aspects. In an interview to Associated Press, Musharraf said Sarabjit had “carried out terrorist attacks and killed people here” but the President added he would look into the legal aspects of the case.

“One has to take the decision in a deliberate manner,” he said. “It needs to come to me with all its legal implications, then only will I take a decision. But I am basically a person who shows compassion and mercy.”
