SC orders Pak govt to limit release of Jang newsprint

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan supreme court has directed the government to release 200 reels of newsprint to Jang, the country8217;s largest newspaper group facing sedition charges, to avoid closure of the publication till February 9. The bench gave the directions while turning down petitioner Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman8217;s contempt of court petition against the government. mir shakil pleaded that the government had lately confiscated newsprint from its godowns despite the payment of customs duty. He urged the court to order for release of at least 500 reels of the newsprint for publication of the papers till February 9 when the court will resume its hearing of the case. The bench, however, ordered for release of 200 reels to ensure continued publication till the next hearing.

Experts conquer puzzling chocolate problem

Chechen presidential decree calls for Islamic laws

MOSCOW: Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov has issued a decree that in effect strips parliament of key powers and calls for a new constitution to be worked out based on Islamic Sharia law, according to reports. The decree calls on parliament to retain a minor regulatory role, according to Russian wire service reports. Key sectors including the government and the armed forces will be subject to Islamic law. Observers said the decree followed pressure from influential opposition field commanders who seek a greater Islamisation of Chechenya.
