The BJP’s rath yatra — launched from four different corners of Assam on Tuesday to create public opinion on Bangladeshi infiltration, increased ISI activities and scrapping of the controversial IMDT Act — has been greeted with bandhs and protests in different districts of the state.

The rath yatra that was flagged off at Dhubri by Central Water Resources Minister Bijoya Chakravarty met with obstruction by the All Assam Koch-Rajbangshi Students’ Union (AKRASU), but the procession managed to pass through the district with police protection.

While AKRASU has opposed the rath yatra to register protests against the creation of Bodoland, the All Assam Minorities Students’ Union has complained that the BJP was harassing indigenous Muslims in the name of throwing out Bangladeshi migrants.

Similarly, bandhs also greeted the rath yatra flagged off from Jonai in Upper Assam by Central Rural Development Minister Sanghapriya Gautam in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur district.

Minister Jasmine Kaur Meena and Union Minister for North-East Development C.P. Thakur flagged off two other rath yatras at Tinsukia and Karinganj respectively.

The four rathyatras are scheduled to converge in Guwahati on April 7 after covering all the districts of the state. ‘‘We are trying to draw the attention of the people towards the dangers of unabated Bangla infiltration as well as the increased ISI activities in the region,’’ said state BJP general secretary Dhruba Prasad Baishya. The party is also mustering public opinion in favour of scrapping the controversial IMDT Act.
