JALANDHAR, Aug 17: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is being apprised of the custodial death of a 22-year-old youth, Satnam Singh at Adampur, about 25 km from here last evening.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh of Adampur police station after registering a case under Section 349 of IPC. Satnam Singh was allegedly brought to the Adampur police station illegally from where he reportedly tried to run away and was crushed to death by a speeding Matador.
The driver of the Matador has also been arrested, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Jalandhar P. S. Gill.
Two police officials had allegedly brought the youth from his Khurdpur village to Adampur police station on a scooter last evening. As they reached the police station, the youth reportedly tried to run away and was crushed by the Matador.
Hearing of the death of the youth, the villagers adjoining the Adampur town gheraoed and pelted stones on the police station. The irate mob had also blocked traffic for more than five hours on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur road last night.
The SSP said that a magisterial inquiry had been ordered and the NHRC was being informed about the incident through a report and a video cassette of the post mortem on youth’s body was also being sent.
Amidst heavy police bandobast, the body of the youth was cremated at his native place today. There was no report of any untoward incident.
The irate mob protesting the death of the youth last evening had damaged a police Gypsy and also pelted stones at the police station at Adampur. The mob was uncontrollable despite repeated lathi-charges by the police.
