The Arushi case was caught in a crossfire with Mayawati accusing the Congress of ‘politicising’ the gruesome double murder, a charge rejected by Union Minister Renuka Chowdhury.

Coming under attack for the ‘shoddy’ investigation into the murder of 14-year old school girl Arushi and domestic help Hemraj on May 16, the UP Chief Minister announced that she was recommending a CBI probe into the case.

Addressing a press conference, Mayawati, however, expressed doubt whether the CBI would take up the case, saying some requests in the past for such a probe had been turned down.

In New Delhi, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal expressed Centre’s reluctance to handover the case to CBI.

“The UP Special Task Force is already probing the matter and there is no need for a CBI inquiry,” he said.

The police, meanwhile, submitted an application before the Noida Chief Judicial Magistrate A K Singh seeking permission for conducting narco-analysis and lie detection tests of Arushi’s father Rajesh Talwar, the prime accused who is remanded to three days police custody.

The police denied charges of torture and use of ‘third degree’ methods during interrogation of Talwar at an undisclosed destination.

Investigators also gave a list of things including Arushi’s laptop they have seized from the residence of Talwar in connection with the probe.
