Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta is set to leave hospital on Friday after suffering a fit on the pitch during Thursday’s UEFA Cup tie against Dinamo Bucharest.

The Spaniard was clattered to the ground by Mihaita Plesan’s crude challenge late in the game at Goodison Park, the Bucharest player appearing to elbow Arteta in the back of the head.

Television pictures showed Arteta’s legs shaking uncontrollably as he received extensive treatment before being put in a neck brace and taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

“I spoke to Mikel this morning and he seems okay,” Everton physio Mick Rathbone told the club’s website. “The hospital was planning to give him a CT scan and we expect him to be released at lunchtime.

“When it happened he was dis-orientated but never lost consciousness. These incidents tend to look worse than they are.”
