Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has rejected a suggestion by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson that the London club are over-confident about winning the premier league title. Champions Arsenal have a five-point lead over United with nine games to go but Campbell said he and his team mates were taking nothing for granted.
“We are not an arrogant bunch, far from it, and that is quite special,” Campbell said on Thursday. Why would we want to say we have done this or that when we have not achieved anything yet? That is plain to see and we know there is still work to be done.”
Ferguson said of Arsenal on Tuesday: “They are speaking very confidently down there and I always think the nature of football comes back and kicks you. Over-confidence is something you have to guard against.” But Campbell said: “Arsenal are a very traditional club and at the moment they have a bunch of lads who are down to earth and get on with the job.
“Of course, players have got to have something about them because it is not easy out there. We are confident but not over-confident. We’ve not lost sight of what we are trying to achieve. We are in a good position but we are not taking anything for granted. The hunger is there and we all respect the situation we are in.”
