In a replay of the New Year's eve incident at the Park Street police station, two Army officers — a Major and a Captain—were arrested on Saturday night for violating the law and assaulting policemen at a well-known nightclub. The incident took place around 2 am. The two from the 6 Engineers Regiment were part of a group of four inebriated Army officers. They began with misbehaving with the club's security guards and then manhandled them when asked to behave or leave. A spokesperson for the nightclub said: "These customers had misbehaved with other customers. Our securitymen asked them not to cause any nuisance here. But they were adamant. Finding no other way, our guards forced them to step out of the club," she said. The club authorities finally called in the police after they failed to restrain the officers.But the Army officers allegedly manhandled the policemen too. Sergeant Bed Prakash Rai sustained injuries on his head and body. "We arrested the two — Major Ramanathan and Captain Ankit — and took them to the police station. Then we intimated the Fort William. At the Army's request, we handed the two officers over to them," said the Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Goutam Mohan Chakraborty. The other two officers managed to flee.He said a case had been filed against the two officers. Officers from the Park Street Police Station declined to comment, saying it was a "sensitive issue". Police sources, however, said the two officers were completely inebriated and began vomiting soon after they were brought in. Army spokesman R K Das said: "It was a trivial incident. You are making a mountain out of molehill for no reason. We have started an investigation. If the officers are found to be guilty, they would be punished." He also said the two officers had been transferred here recently."Major Ramanathan is from south India while Captain Ankit is from Himachal Pradesh. Apparently, the situation went out of control owing to the language barrier," he added.
