SURAT, Oct 19: In a case of armed robbery that took place in the city on Monday, four burglars barged into a textile unit in the Khatodara area of the city and escaped with Rs 65,000 in cash. The Umra police are still clueless about the identity of the accused and investigations are on.

According to the police, the accused — all aged between 25 and 30 — armed with long knives and one possessing a round object wound by strings claiming it to be a bomb, entered into the office of Shriram Textiles located at Survey no 32/7, Mahatma Ni Wadi at Khatodara on Sunday morning and threatened the workers to move out of the unit.

One of the accused stabbed the manager, Ashwinbhai, in the stomach, while another assaulted him with a knife, the police said, adding that he is being treated at the New Civil hospital and is out of danger. The accused then took Rs 65,000 from the cupboard after forcibly taking the keys from the manager. All the accused later escaped after locking the manager’s cabin from outside, eyewitnesses said.

According to one Pandit Sapkale, a worker at the loom and an eye-witness, in his complaint stated that though the four accused resembled udiyamalis — a term used to describe people hailing from Orissa — none of them could be identified.
