Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh today justified his ministry’s approval to the 50 per cent quota for Muslim students in the Aligarh Muslim University and said the decision would not be reversed.

“No separate rules were framed by the HRD ministry nor did I, as the minister, enforce a separate law. The government only upheld the right of the AMU to reserve 50 per cent seats for students belonging to the minority community”, Singh, in his address to a function organised by the All India Minorities Welfare Society, said.

The minister said the decision was in tune with the common minimum programme of the UPA government which pledged to encourage minority education.

Singh criticised the changes the NDA government introduced in the education system. “Unfortunately, some parties have the habit of superimposing the image of the country on their own image”, he said.
