Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein will have vanished from the world scene within a year, the former head of Israel’s spy service Mossad Ephraim Halevy told the daily Maariv in remarks published on Thursday.

Halevy said the two leaders’ standing is deteriorating daily, including in the eyes of Arab leaders.

He also said: ‘‘in two or three years, there could be changes in Iran,’’ and predicted that the Iranian Islamic regime could possibly collapse, given certain conditions.

‘‘Part of the Iranian leadership is in disagreement with the regime’s official line which calls for the destruction of Israel,’’ he said.

He also said: ‘‘many signs show Osama bin Laden was killed … But there is no body to prove this.’’

Halevy headed Mossad for more than four years before being appointed head of Israel’s National Security Council two months ago.
