HYDERABAD, MAY 7: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y S Rajashekhar Reddy on Sunday said the May 11 dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the party to protest against the "indifferent" attitude of the state government in providing relief in the drought-affected areas, was to draw the world’s attention to the misery faced by the people.

Talking to newsmen here, he said party workers would picket all the bus depots from 5 hours and stage road and rail roko agitations. However, essential services like water, milk, power and hospitals would be exempted from the bandh, he added.

Nine left parties including the CPI (M) and the CPI have also called for a statewide bandh on the same day in protest against the State Government’s `failure’ to tackle the drought, and to condemn the price hike and increase in power tariff. Lashing out at the ruling TDP for not insisting on a roll backof the hike in the prices of essential commodities by the Centre, Dr Reddy said the TDP had "deceived the people" by initially opposing the hike in view of the municipal elections.

Dr Reddy said more than 17,400 villages in the state, especially in the worst-hit Mahabubnagar, Anantapur and Nalgonda districts, were facing acute drinking water scarcity and urged the government to open gruel centres, besides providing water in the affected areas.
