OCTOBER 25: With state records in each of the three events she participated in, 20-year-old Pune girl Aparna Badkar was named best girl athlete on the second and concluding day of the Maharashtra State Senior Athletics Championship at the University Pavilion here today.

Yesterday, the SP College Standard XII student, who trains on her own at Nehru Stadium, Pune, had laid low the triple jump mark. Today, she bettered the state 400m hurdle mark by 3.3 seconds, and went a whopping 44 centimetres past the long jump record, held by Manjiri Harip, to measure 5.74m.

Aparna also holds the state long jump record for women, set at the Inter-State Meet at Bangalore last year. Funnily, the women’s mark of 5.72 is lower than the girls under-22 mark!

Bombay City district won three of the four team championship, while Nagpur clinched the women team championship.

National record holder Sanjeev Nair easily won the 3000m steeple chase, but his timing of 9.33.6 was nowhere near the National mark of 9.03 (u-22) he set in1997. Sanjeev, a Western Railway employee, had shattered the National 1500m mark yesterday.

Meanwhile, Brahma Dubey, who entered his names in the record books by erasing the National mark for javelin throw (u-22) yesterday, is hoping that the feat gets him a place in the National camp at Patiala. The SAI trainee, who picked up the javelin courtesy maternal uncle SB Mishra, a former National champion and current state record holder, said, “National coach MS Dhillon saw me at the circuit meet on Thursday and told me, `If you cross 70, I will take you to Patiala. He has asked me to participate in the Circuit Meet at Calcutta, and I hope to do well there.”
