
BANGALORE, AUG 26: Aparna Popat was the lone Indian left in competition when she defeated Nicole Grether of Germany 11-4, 11-4 to enter pre-quarters of the Konica Cup Signapore Open badminton championship today.
According to a Badminton Association of India press release, Aparna will meet former world No 1 Gong Zichao of China in the pre-quarterfinals.
The first Indian to crash out of the tourney was Nikhil Kanetkar, who lost to Ji Xinpen of China 14-17, 9-15, Abhinn Shyam Gupta lost to Jaison Wong of Malaysia 7-15, 13-15, P Gopi Chand was humbled by Saman Ismail of Malaysia 2-15, 15-13, 11-15, Siddarth Jain lost to Anders Boesen of Denmark 13-15, 9-15.
Neelima Choudhary lost to Fatima Kumin Lim of Singapore 4-11, 11-8, 1-11 while Manjusha Kanwar was defeated by Woon Sze Mei of Malaysia 9-11, 1-11 in first round encounters.
Gopi Chand pairing with Manjusha lost to the top seeds Kimdong Moon and Ra Kyu Ming of Korea 3-15, 2-15 in the mixed doubles.
