NEW DELHI, August 15: In a major upset today, Delhi State Chess champion Varun Sharma of Ramjas School (RK Puram) was outclassed by Anup Jaiaraj of DTEA in the third round of Inaugural Chess Championship organised by 64 Squares Chess Academy being held at GHPS, India Gate.

Anup with three points shares the lead with Kabir Punde of Mother’s International who outplayed Samarth Modwal of DPS (RK Puram). R. Srinivasan of Rai School and Manish Uniyal of Arwachin School are following the leaders with 2.5 points. Drawing their ame in the Sicilian Dragon classical variation, R. Srinivasan having the advantage of dragon bishop in the middle game was unable to convert it into a win and accepted draw offered by Manish.

Yesterday, in the second round, Anup Jairaj had defeated Avijit Mishra of NPS (Sahibabad) in an irregular opening while Kabir Pandey had outwitted Summet Kumat of Modern School (Barakhamba Road). Varun Sharma had moved to third round beating Manumadan.
