The Congress high command’s decision to play it safe till the December 1 Assembly polls is turning out to be counter-productive in Kerala.

At the same time, the party high command is running out of face-saving and time-buying measures like issuing show-cause notices to its partymen which have so far not been answered.

Apparently counting on the persuasion skills of AICC Kerala incharge Ahmed Patel and Kerala Chief Minister A.K. Antony the party had felt that the dissidence in the state could be dealt with later. With the crisis becoming too hot, the CM is arriving in Delhi tonight to discuss calling a one-day Assembly session for a confidence vote.

Antony is taking forward the Left Democratic Front’s demand to convene the Assembly to take up the no-confidence motion against Speaker Vakkom Purushottaman.

While the Kerala Cabinet would discuss the LDF proposal on November 12, it is learnt that Antony and his supporters are keen for such a vote as it would ‘‘expose’’ the dissidents, which would then put the ball in the high command’s court.

But the party leadership in Delhi is apprehensive that taking a decisive action at this juncture could split the party in the state and destabilise the government. Especially, if a section of the Congress were to join another party, the move could have a negative impact on the four Congress-ruled states going to polls.
