NEW DELHI, JAN 6: The Supreme Court has refused to grant anticipatory bail to Essa Abdul Razzak Memon, brother of Tiger Memon, the main suspect behind the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai.

Essa Memon, an absconding accused, is facing charges of criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code and Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act.

According to CBI sources today, Essa Memon had, through a special leave petition, challenged the order of the designated CBI court in Mumbai rejecting his plea for anticipatory bail.

Essa Memon was a resident of Al-hussaini building in Mahim, along with Tiger Memon and his family members. They fled abroad immediately before the serial blasts. Essa Memon was the co-owner of the building.

The blasts in March, 1993 caused 257 fatalities and injured 730 in the financial capital of the country.

The conspiracy, according to CBI, was hatched in the Mahim premises by Tiger Memon who fled the country on March 12 after all preparations were completed. He had sent his family members a day before.
