China has warned that the increasing number of anti-dumping cases against Chinese firms in India will be harmful for the healthy development of trade relations between the two countries.

Speaking at a function organised by the CII Chinese Ambassador to India Hua Junduo said ‘‘we are concerned about the issue. Anti-dumping is like a double-edged sword since such duties also hurt the domestic industry.’’ Junduo said one of the reasons for the large number of anti-dumping cases against China was lack of understanding.

‘‘It was essential for both countries to communicate and deliberate before such cases are initiated,’’ he said.

China also stated that lack of understanding, confidence and knowledge were among the main reasons for low volume of bilateral trade with India which was expected to cross the $4 billion mark this year. The Ambassador was, however, optimistic that the bilateral trade would cross the $4 billion threshold this year from last year’s level of around $3.6 billion. The ambassador said Chinese companies were very keen to set up joint venture with Indian firms in areas such as engineering, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, electronics, road building and manufacturing.

Asked if Chinese firms would be keen to bid for Indian public sector companies being privatised, he said, ‘‘the possibility is there. At the same time, we would like Indian companies to pick up stake in Chinese firms.’’

On WTO, Junduo said China was very much interested in protecting rights of developing countries.
