Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee today said that the proposed amendments in the anti-defection law for disqualification of an MP who leaves his or her party were not aimed at benefiting the NDA Government.

‘‘Congress is the worst sufferer in Uttar Pradesh due to defection. Hence, it is not proper to say that the proposed amendments were aimed at benefiting the NDA,’’ Vajpayee told reporters here before leaving for the Capital.

He was replying to a question on Congress’ allegation that the BJP was bringing in the amendment for its own benefit in the backdrop of the defection by 13 BJP MLAs to Congress in Chhattisgarh.
