Viswanathan Anand played a quiet draw with the FIDE Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov in the fourth round of the Linares Super Grandmasters chess championships, to share the lead with Garry Kasparov. It was the fourth straight draw for Kasimdzhanov. Both Anand and Kasparov now have two points each from three games.

Peter Leko, Michael Adams and Rustam Kasimdzhanov also have two points each but they have played four games each, according to reports reaching here.

In the closed Ruy Lopez, Anand played a novelty on the 12th move, but it was not something that had Kasimdzhanov struggling. And two moves later, it was clear that Anand could take a pawn. He finally did but black (Kasimdzhanov) got enough activity for a draw, which was agreed upon on the 33rd move.

In the other games, Michael Adams beat Franscisco Vallejo Pons, who was losing his second consecutive game. Adams tore through Sicilian Najdorf Defence from Vallejo who played a rather rare move and landed himself in problems which Adams exploited. The loss was clear from the 25th move onwards and Vallejo finally resigned on move 34.

Veselin Topalov’s clash with Peter Leko was the game of the day. It was a very complicated variation of the Sicilian and Leko used up a huge amount of time. But he did a good job of holding his position together until just before first time control where he failed to find the best and ended up with a lost position. Then Topalov missed some important points and in the end the players split the point after 57 moves.

Pairing for Round 5
Kasparov v Adams; Kasimdzhanov v Topalov; Vallejo Pons v Anand; Free day: Peter Leko.

Results of Round 4
Anand drew with Kasimdzhanov; Adams beat Vallejo Pons; Topalov drew with Leko. Free Day: Kasparov
