After Burail, Tihar and Chapra, 10 undertrials from Borsad Subjail in Anand attacked two guards and walked out of prison last night. The undertrials were involved in petty offences like theft and loot and a manhunt has been launched for them. The injured guards — Poonam Shankarbhai and Natu Mawabhai — are being treated at Krishna Hospital in Karamsad. An undertrial who tried to come to the guards’ aid — Shaukat Ali Saiyed — was also injured in the incident. The incident took place at around 11.15 pm when only two of the four guards were on duty. Undertrial Bhagwandas complained of stomach ache and sought permission to use the toilet. As soon as the guards opened the door, Bhagwandas and another inmate Kabhai Vasava attacked them and took away their keys. They hit the guards on their head with rifle butts till they were unconscious. The two then unlocked two other barracks and instigated other inmates to escape with them. Eight undertrials joined them. However, none of the 22 prisoners, barring Saiyed, a constable’s son, offered any resistance. The eight others who escaped were identified as Narsinh Damor, Dilip Peerubhai Mali, Rameshbhai alias Vajesinh Bhuria, Laxmanbhai Bharwad, Dineshbhai alias Munno Ramanbhai Solanki, Mansinh alias Lalo Manish Daulatsinh Raj, Jalabhai alias Jalio Vejsinh Pathan and Mohammed Noor Ismail Shaikh. What has fuelled speculation of insider involvement is that two constables were missing. While one constable was absent from duty from 6 pm, the other had said that he was going for dinner and returned only after the incident. DIG (Ahmedababd Range) A.K. Sharma said since the absconding undertrials are from Dahod, Kheda and Anand districts a close watch is being kept on these districts.
