The delayed flight meant a longer wait for Anju Bobby George and the milling crowd at the IG International Airport. As the Air France flight 418, which brought home India’s first World Athletics Championship medalist home, arrived 25 minutes late the fans were getting anxious and so was the star. Finally, when the crowd spotted Anju with the all-important bronze medal around her neck, the crowd was elated and so was she. ‘‘Happy to return home and my thanks to everybody for the help,’’ said an overwhelmed Anju.
This set many more rounds of ear-shattering dhol beats, scores of cameras flashs and the slogan Anju-Bobby Bharat ka shaan.’’ Joining the reception party, which consisted of athletes and officials, were curious onlookers, security personnel posted outside and even some taxi drivers.
Anju, who looked quite relieved, said that her year’s goal was achieved. ‘‘It all started from here (New Delhi) and it is ending here. I was too tired by the time I reached Monaco. It was just a great event and I have no regrets,’’ she said.
How much of credit does she give to world record-holder Mike Powell, the long-jump sensation said: ‘‘Yes, he had a part to play in my success but the credit goes to my husband for long-term planning, my hard work and dedication. I am happy my medal winning performance will inspire the rest to perform,’’ she said.
