Anil Ambani took over as the Chairman of India’s largest private telecom firm, Reliance Infocomm Ltd, which he got as part of the settlement of Rs 100,000 crore group from his elder brother Mukesh.

Anil also recast the company’s board by bringing in Gautam Doshi, an eminent chartered accountant and J. Ramachandran, a professor at Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, who have been appointed directors on the RIC board in place of Manoj Modi and Y.P. Trivedi.

After performing a small puja at the Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge Centre(DAKC) at around 11 am, Anil went to his office on the second floor, holding his mother Kokilaben’s hand.

After assuming charge, Ambani Jr went from block to block, shaking hands with his employees and addressing them briefly. ‘‘I am very happy to be here. I apologise for calling you here on a Sunday, but I promise you this won’t be the last,’’ he said amidst laughter.

This was Anil’s first visit ever to RIC’s sprawling 140 acre campus at the DAKC in Navi Mumbai ever since its inception.

Anil, dressed in a pin-striped blue shirt and dark blue trousers, donning a tilak, even insisted on his swipe card on his very first visit.

Later in a web cast to RIC’s 40,000 employees in 85 locations, Anil said: ‘‘It is a privilege to assume the leadership of this great enterprise. We are committed to creating value and leading a billion Indians into the digital era. We will make Reliance Infocomm the most valuable company in the world.’’

Referring to his other companies — Reliance Energy and Reliance capital, Ambani said, ‘‘Reliance Infocomm has both energy and capital and I want growth with profitability and revenue.’’

Anil complemented his elder brother Mukesh for creating truly a world class infrastructure at the Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC) and providing him an opportunity to lead it.

He appealed to the employees for their support, commitment and trust to establish Reliance Infocomm as a clear market leader.

The junior Ambani, however, preferred not to talk to the waiting media today. Instead, he was edgy when photographers and reporters stood on his way as he walked into the Centre after visiting the temple within the campus. ‘‘If you all can come out… I can go in,’’ he said.

Reliance Infocomm Ltd, now an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprise Group company, is India’s largest private information and communications services provider, with a subscriber base of over 11 million.

Thanks to Mukesh, Reliance Infocomm has established a pan-India, high-capacity, integrated (wireless and wireline), convergent (voice, data and video) digital network, to offer services spanning the entire Infocomm value chain.
