The unlettered in Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s constituency, Andipatti, can now get in touch with her — through voice mail.
A touch-screen kiosk installed at the CM’s office here has put an end to villagers’ troubles. Earlier, they had to run around for someone literate to help convey grievances to their MLA.
Offering voice mail is the touch-screen kiosk fitted with a micro receiver and camera. Those with any grievance need only touch the screen to activate it.
The very first touch of the screen offers four options: audio recording, audio visual, and or recording, and registering written complaints, either in Tamil or English.
For making a representation in writing, the person must be literate to operate the alphabets which appear on the screen.
The unlettered can make use of the audio or visual facilities. They just have to touch the button and their complaint is recorded by the in-built camera.
In audio-visual recording, the person making the complaint is filmed in action.
People can now use this just as if the CM were at the other end. Their complaints can even be replayed back to them after recording.
At the end, the computer gives a number to each complainant for future reference.
All complaints are stored in a CD and forwarded to the CM’s grievance cell for action, says assistant Vetri. So far, 35 people have used the facility.
Villagers hope that the system, which has brought them close to the Chief Minister like never before, will ensure quick redressal of grievances.
