Accounting firm Andersen said on Thursday that Aldo Cardoso, head of Andersen in France, would become acting chief executive with immediate effect.

Cardoso, also chairman of Andersen Worldwide’s board, succeeds Joseph Berardino, who resigned last week. An Andersen Worldwide statement said Cardoso had been appointed for an indefinite term.

The beleaguered accounting firm has been indicted in the United States for its role as auditor of Enron, the US energy trader which filed for bankruptcy last December
