Deputy IG of Prisons T S Bhamre, who was looking after the Western region and handled administration at the office of IG of Prisons, has been suspended pending probe for alleged involvement in financial and administrative irregularities.
IGP B T Ninglova served the suspension orders on Bhamre on Friday. Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Ashok Kingi, who was in Mumbai, today took over as chief of Western region and administration at the Inspector General of Prisons’ office.
According to jail officials, the decision to suspend Bhamre was taken by the Prison Department after receiving some complaints against him.
Bhamre is facing charges of ‘‘misusing’’ prisoners lodged at Yerawada Central Jail for non-official purposes such as landscaping work at his residence. They added that Bhamre used prisoners to do various chores at the inauguration of a departmental store which was recently opened in his wife’s name at Vishrantwadi.
Moreover, sources said some irregularities were also alleged in the stock of various articles produced at the jail industry. Stock of notebooks manufactured at Yerawada Central Jail were allegedly transferred to Aurangabad jail, they added.
