KHARAR, June 3: The Punjab Government has drawn up an ambitious multi-crore plan to develop Anandpur Sahib, the birth place of the Khalsa, into an “Ajooba” (eighth wonder of the world) to mark the tricentenary celebrations of the Khalsa Panth in 1999.

All the development projects being undertaken at Anandpur Sahib under this plan would be completed by February, 1999. This was disclosed by Vini Mahajan, Chief Administrator of the Anandpur Sahib Urban Planning and Development Authority (ASUPDA) while taking to Newsline.

She said that ASUPDA had already acquired 583 kanals and 9 marlas of land for the purpose. Efforts to acquiesce 130 acres of more land are on.She said the Public Works Department (B&R) had taken up five state projects at Anandpur Sahib at the cost of Rs 3,246 lakh and work was in progress, which would be completed by February, 1999.

The central projects include realignment of Sirsa-Ghanauli road and construction of bridge on Sutlej river near Bunga Sahib. These projects are being funded by the Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India.There is a proposal for setting up of Dashmesh Academy of Martial Sports at Anandpur Sahib. The academy will spread over 25-acre of land.

The Planning Commission and the Government of India has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for this purpose. The civil hospital in Anandpur Sahib is being upgraded to 100-bed hospital with the funds provided by the World Bank. .A polytechnic has also been proposed at Anandpur Sahib which will be built at the cost of Rs 1.15 crore. The construction of this polytechnic will begin shortly.
