CHENNAI, SEPTEMBER 7: Viswanathan Anand got off to a flying start to his two-game quarter-final series with Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine by winning the first game with black pieces in the World Chess Cup at Shenyang on Thursday.

Gilberto Milos of Brazil did well to hold Sergei Movsesian of Armenia to a draw in the first game in another exciting quarterfinal. On move 20, Milos launched an aggressive Kingside pawn storm against the Sicilian Defence of his Czech opponent. Milos, however, had castled kingside and had an exposed King. The flank attack was countered by Movsesian with a break in the centre. After 39 moves, Movsesian had an extra pawn in a Queen, double rook and bishop ending but that was not enough.

Boris Gelfand of Israel won two pawns in the middle game against Ye Jiangchuan of China in Kings Indian Defence and reached an opposite coloured bishop ending. After 65 moves, Gelfand was poised to convert his material advantage into a win.
