The high-profile political couple Anand Mohan and Lovely broke into tears once a local judge sentenced the husband to death and his wife to life term for the murder of a district magistrate in 1994.

“No no, we were not expecting this sort of punishment. We have done nothing wrong and we are not involved in the killing of the District Magistrate of Gopalganj G Krishnaiah about 13 years ago,” said the sobbing duo after the court passed the order on Wednesday.

“We are going to challenge the order in the superior court shortly,” said Anand Mohan, former MP, after regaining his nerves.

Former RJD MLA Akhlaq Ahmed, sentenced to death, also could not hold back his tears hearing the judgment.

Vijay Kumar Shukla alias Munna Shukla, a ruling JD(U) MLA, who got life sentence, saw conspiracy in the case and said he was in the funeral procession of his brother when the magistrate got killed. “I’ll challenge the order,” he said.

Riot control vehicles, special auxiliary police personnel and Bihar Military Police cordoned off the court premises before the convicts were taken to jail.

While three got capital punishment, four were sentenced to life imprisonment by Additional Sessions judge Ram Krishna Rai.
