KOCHI, January 4: Viswanathan Anand of India held his own with black pieces against Anatoly Karpov of Russia in Game Three of their World Chess Championship title match with a 19-move draw at Lausanne today, according to reports reaching here. Anand, who came from behind in the series, has psychologically neutralised Karpov's advantage of enjoying enough rest before the match as he goes into Game Four with white pieces after a day's rest tomorrow.Karpov was willing to repeat the Slav Defence (Meran) of Game One, which gave him a kick-start in the series. But the Indian, sensing that the defending champion is quite well-prepared in this line, avoided it completely by switching track on move six by accepting the pawn in the Queen-bishop file and thereby transposing it to Queens Gambit Accepted.By move 16, the players reached a symmetrical position with four pawns each on the Kingside against the one on the Queenside and identical pieces. Realising there was no breakthrough Karpov agreed to draw the game.Karpov-Anand (Game 3)1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3 e6 5.Nf3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4 b5 8.Bd3 Bb7 9.a3 b4 10.Ne4 Nxe4 11.Bxe4 bxa3 12.bxa3 Bd6 13.O-O O-O 14.Bb2 Rb8 15.Qc2 c5 16.Bxb7 Rxb7 17.dxc5 Bxc5 18.Rfd1 Qe7 19.a4 1/2-1/2GAME TWO: Vishwanathan Anand (India) struck with white pieces to draw level (1-1) with Anatoly Karpov (Russia) after his 42 move win in Ruy Lopez in the second game of the World Chess Championship at Lausanne today according to reports reaching here.Curiously Karpov shelved his favourite Caro-Kann Defence and gave the option of choosing the Ruy Lopez for Anand.Karpov expanded on the Queenside and pushed his pawns with the help of his bishop and knight. Then he came up with a surprise by sacrificing an exchange on move 19 for a pawn.Game 21.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Bc5 6.c3 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.a4 Bg4 9.d3 0-0 10.h3 Bxf3 11.Qxf3 Na5 12.Bc2 b4 13.Nb2 Rb8 14.Qe2 Re8 15.Nf3 bxc3 16.bxc3 Nb3 17.Bxb3 Rxb3 18.d4 exd4 19.cxd4 Rxf3 20.Qxf3 Bxd4 21.Ra2 Nxe4 22.Qd3 c5 23.Qxa6 d5 24.a5 c4 25.Be3 Be5 26.Bb6 27.Qa7 Qc6 28.Bd4 Bc7 29.Rb2 c3 30.Rb7 Rc8 31.Bb6 Be5 32.Rxf7 c2 33.Rc1 Nc3 34.Rf3 h6 35.Qf7 Kh8 36.Re3 d4 37.Rxe5 d3 38.Bd4 Rg8 39.Re6 d2 40.Rxc6 dx1=Q 41.Kh2 Qd2 42.Rc8 1-0 (42.Qf4+ 43.Qf4 c1=Q 44.Bxg7+Kxg7 45.Rc7+Kg6 46.Qf7+Kg5 47.Rc5+Kh4 48.G3 mate).
