Shenyang, Sept 5: Viswanathan Anand expectedly reached the knock-out quarter-finals of the World Chess Cup in Shenyang on Tuesday after he forced Vladimir Tkachiev of France to split the point in the fifth round. Anand topped Group D with 3.5 points after Boris Gelfand drew with tailender in the Group, Tissir and ended up with three points.
Ye Juangchuan crushed compatriot Xu’s chances of qualifying and insured his berth in the quarter-finals. Milos and Ye join Anand and Bareev in the quarter-finals. Bareev crushed the Kings Indian Defence of Fedorov in 40 moves.
In Group B, Short and Ivanchuk have to play off for the second quarter-finals berth later on Tuesday.
In the women’s section, the qualifiers are: Zhu, Xu, Wang Yu, Zhukova and Hoang. Zhu and Xu led the Chinese onslaught in Group A. Wang Yu drew with Maya Chiburdanidze to finish with four points in the women’s Group D. In Group B, Qin, Wang Pin and Skripchenko figured in a three-way tie.
