Anand fifth; three share crown

Viswanathan Anand ended the Corus Grandmasters chess tournament on a tame note — a 27-move draw with David Navara of Czech Republic to end the event with 7.5 points — ending fifth.

Viswanathan Anand ended the Corus Grandmasters chess tournament on a tame note — a 27-move draw with David Navara of Czech Republic to end the event with 7.5 points — ending fifth.

Anand remained a full point behind joint winners Veselin Topalov, Teimour Radjabov and Lev Aronian, all of whom had 8.5 points. Anand has won the title five times in the past.

Anand and Navarra drew in Ruy Lopez closed and Radjabov played a safe and solid draw with Topalov to move to shared top spot.

Aronian played an aggressive and superb show to beat Dutchman Sergei Tiviakov. For Radjabov, this was one of the best results of his young career.

Vladimir Kramnik outplayed Dutchman Loek Van Wely to go eight points and finish fourth, half a point ahead of Anand.

In Group C, Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi scored a win in last round over China’s talented Hou Yifan. Negi had 7.5 points and ended fourth in a solid field. Negi started the event as fifth seed.

In Group C, Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia who led all through lost his last game to IM Nadezhda Kosintseva with his white pieces. That allowed Michael Krasenkow of Poland to take the title as he beat Zhaoqin Peng in his final round game to total 10.5 points in all. Nepomniachtchi finished second on 10 points Emanuel Berg of Sweden was third on 8 points.

5) Anand 7.5; 6) Svidler 7.0;

7) Navara and Karjakin 6.5;

9) Ponomariov 6.0; 10) Motylev, Tiviakov and Van Wely 5.0;

13) Carlsen and Shirov 4.5.
