DORTMUND, July 11: Fide world champion Anatoly Karpov and Britain’s Michael Adams were in joint lead after the first day of the 27th Dortmund Grandmasters chess tournament yesterday.

Karpov beat Bosnian Grandmaster Ivan Sokolov while Adams defeated Dutchman Jan Timman after a five-hour battle.

India’s Viswanathan Anand drew with Bulgarian Veselin Topalov while Russian Vladimir Kramnik, who has won the competition four times, could only draw with 19-year-old Hungarian Peter Leko.
