Viswanathan Anand crushed Englishman Michael Adams in 32 moves in the third round of the world chess championship here yesterday. He stays tied in lead with 2.5 points, along with Veselin Topalov, who outmanoeuvred Alexander Morozevich in 75.

Peter Svidler of Russia dealt Peter Leko of Hungary his second loss while Judit Polgar of Hungary beat Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan.

Anand, playing white in a Ruy Lopez game, brought his Queen’s Rook into play on g3 as early as the 21st move. He gave up the exchange for Kingside initiative. Adams sacrificed his Bishop to open the centre but Anand’s kingside attack was faster. Adams had to give up his Queen for Anand’s Rook on g3 as Anand stripped the castled king of its pawn cover. Facing a mating net, Adams resigned on the 32nd move.
