Chennai, January 19: Viswanathan Anand and Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine played out a 19-move draw in Caro-Kann Defence in the fifth round of the Corus Super category chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee on Thursday. With their fourth draw in five games, Anand and Ivanchuk moved up to three points after the fifth round. Friday will be a rest day.

Ivanchuk adopted the Caro-Kann Defence and equalised quickly. For a change Anand was slow to come out of the opening. Once the bishops got exchanged on move 19, there was nothing left in the game to fight for and the Indian agreed for the draw.

In the Garry Kasparov vs Vladimir Kramnik game, the Berlin Defence surfaced again. Kramnik, as he did in the series against Kasparov in London, traded the Queens early (on the eighth move here). After just 13 moves only the rooks and minor pieces remained on the board.

KRAMNIK, SHIROV IN FORM: #Vladimir Kramnik and Alexie of Russia and Alexie Shirov of Spain moved into top gear with fourth round wins for shared first place with Garry Kasparov with three points each on Wednesday.

Alexie Shirov’s defeat of local GM Jeroen Piket was voted the ‘Best Game of the Day’ by the spectators. Shirov had too many pawns for the knight he lost after Piket made a dubious 20th move. Kramnik was too good for Tiviakov while Kasparov got into a deadlock with Ivanchuk in Sicilian. Michael Adams stopped A.Morozevich with Evans Gambit. In Group B, leaders Boris Gulko and Nijboer played a draw in the third round to reach 2.5 points each.
