The 17th Asian Athletics Championship will now be held in Amman, Jordan, in the last week of July.

This was announced by Athletics Federation of India secretary Lalit Bhanot here during the second leg of the 2007 Asian Grand Prix.

The Asian championships were originally supposed to be hosted by Beirut in Lebanon from July 25 to August 2 but had to be moved as the security situation there was not conducive for the hosting of such an event.

India, as well as several other countries, were sounded out for hosting the event and Delhi was also talked about as one of the possible venues. There was even talk of this edition of the championship being cancelled.
