BJP legislator from Amethi and wife of Sanjay Singh, Amita, has finally resigned from the party and the state Assembly, voicing support for ‘‘young’’ Congress led by Priyanka and Rahul.

Amita submitted her resignation to Speaker Kesari Nath Tripathi this afternoon. ‘‘I was pained at being served a notice on ‘anti-party activities’ despite the fact that I had done nothing which would go against the party. I have decided to quit BJP and also the state Assembly seat,’’ she said.

Singh also claimed that those who said children with a foreigner father or mother cannot become the prime minister were not mentally sound. ‘‘This is the time for young leadership and I am believe after active participation of the Gandhi family duo, the Congress will do well,’’ she added.

BJP media in-charge Vijay Pathak said: ‘‘With husband Sanjay Singh already in the party fold, we were awaiting her resignation anytime.’’
