Having established its position as a giant in the field of science and technology, India is all set to have a "Discovery Park" - the first of its kind in Asia - aimed at bringing the state-of-the-art technological facilities to the masses.The "Discovery Park", for which an approval has been given by the Ministry of Science and Technology, is likely to be set-up in the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology (RGIIT), Amethi, an extension campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad (IIIT-A)."The RGIIT, which was set-up four years ago, was named after the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as a tribute to his vision for a technologically advanced India in the 21st century. We have therefore decided to rope in his son and charismatic Congress leader and MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi for laying the foundation stone." IIIT-A, Director, Dr M D Tiwari said.The foundation stone ceremony was likely to be held by the end of May or in the beginning of June, "depending upon Rahul Gandhi's availability", he said, adding that Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal would be the "distinguished guest".He informed that the Ministry has already sanctioned Rs five crore for the pilot project and said the Park would be focused "inevitably on village life and people involved in the business of agriculture" "Besides, the Park will have research and development facilities like tele-medicine, tele-education which will help the farmers in increasing their productivity, so crucial in view of the ongoing agrarian crisis", he said.
