GEORGETOWN, March 3: Fast bowlers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh led the West Indies’ trouncing of England yesterday by 242 runs on the fourth day of the fourth Cable and Wireless cricket Test at Bourda.

The win gave the home team a 2-1 lead in the six-match series with two Tests remaining.

The West Indies, overnight 127 for nine, were buoyed by a record last wicket stand of 70 between Ian Bishop and Dinanath Ramnarine in the first session. It left England a daunting 380 for victory.

England lost a wicket in the third over and only Mark Ramprakash offered any resistance as they folded for 137.

Ramprakash followed his first innings unbeaten 64 with 34, again the top score.

Ambrose and Walsh, both with over 300 Test victims, shared seven cheap wickets as victory was achieved in the last over before the scheduled close.

Ambrose, who started and finished England’s demise, captured four for 38 off 14.1 overs. Walsh, at 35 Ambrose’s senior by a year, grabbed three for 25 off 15 overs.

England’spsychological advantage, gained on day three, soon evaporated in the morning sunshine as Bishop and Ramnarine produced a defiant partnership.

The West Indies" world class new ball pair took over in the afternoon to hammer home the advantage into victory.

Chanderpaul, who made a fine 118 in the West Indies first innings, was named Man of the Match by former West Indies opening batsman Roy Fredericks.

Marshall’s mark beckons Walsh: Walsh, whose Test cricket future was uncertain seven weeks ago, is now on the threshold of becoming West Indies" greatest wicket-taker.

Walsh’s three for 25 in the demolition of England’s second innings left him needing just 10 more wickets to beat Malcolm Marshall’s West Indian Test mark of 376.

The 35-year-old fast bowler’s match haul of five for 72 took his tally to 367 wickets in his 100th Test. He has two Tests of the series remaining — in Barbados on March 12-16 and in Antigua on March 20-24 — in which to overtake Marshall.
