THRISSUR, NOVEMBER 7: It was the most unusual of deliveries. Vasantha, a resident of Oorakam in Kerala, gave birth to a baby boy in a 50-ft-deep well near her house on Monday.

Both the mother and the child were rescued from the well by the fire forcepersonnel. They have been admitted to hospital where they are fine. This was30-year-old Vasantha’s second delivery.

Vasantha, wife of Thorattil Radhakrishnan, was in an advanced stage ofpregnancy when she accidentally fell into the well while drawing water fromit.

Relatives and neighbours who rushed to the spot called the fire forcestation. Surendran, one of the fire force personnel, said when the teamreached the place, a neighbour had climbed down into the well and washolding Vasantha, who was undergoing labour pain, above the water level.

Within few minutes she gave birth to the baby. A stretcher was lowered intothe well and the mother and child were brought up.
