Amid hectic diplomatic activity to seek the backing of the IAEA and NSG members over the Indo-US nuclear deal, India on Tuesday said that all countries have the right to develop peaceful uses of atomic energy in accordance with their obligations.
“Nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in all its aspects has been a long-standing priority for our movement,” External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the 15th Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran.
He insisted that India’s commitment to universal, non-discriminatory and verified nuclear disarmament is consistent and firm.
“We share the belief of our friends in NAM that all states should commit to early negotiations on the complete and verifiable elimination of all nuclear weapons. We also firmly believe that all states have the right to develop peaceful uses of nuclear technology in accordance with their obligations. In this context, the advantages of nuclear power as a clean and affordable source of energy are well known,” Mukherjee said.
Apart from attending the NAM meet, the minister is here to seek support of the countries of the movement who are members of the IAEA, which is to discuss an India-specific safeguards agreement on August 1, and the NSG over the Indo-US nuclear deal.
