The UPA government marked its first anniversary today with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh complimenting chairperson Sonia Gandhi for maintaining ‘‘such vigil on the functioning of the government.’’
While Sonia referred to Singh’s ‘‘dignified and effective leadership’’ —— apparently to obliterate the Opposition’s view of the ‘‘weakest PM ever’’—— Singh went overboard, thanking ‘‘Soniaji’’ in his speech.
‘‘Generations to come will marvel at Soniaji’s renunciation of the seat of power,’’ he said. The PM it took upon himself to thank Sonia on behalf of the people. ‘‘The people of India are truly grateful to the leaders of the UPA, especially Soniaji,’’ is how he put it.
Singh also reserved a few words of thanks for his alliance partners, ‘‘Thiru Karunanidhi, Laloo Prasadji, Sharad Pawarji, Paswanji and Thiru Maran.’’ He also expressed his gratitude to the Left leaders including ‘‘Comrade’’ Surjeet.
