ALIGARH, SEPT 9: Waiting at the Aligarh Civil Hospital you realise that there is no dearth of “well wishers” for Rajan Sharma, an investigating officer of the Intelligence Bureau. While Sharma lies unconcious at the hospital, it is his “brothers” who are fighting for him to give him justice.

Around 10-12 men, claiming to be from the Hindu Jagran Manch, arrive at the hospital. They insist on seeing their “brother”. After being politely denied entry into the hospital ward, they leave. The ritual is repeated almost immediately when another set of “well-wishers” arrives. This time, they say they’re from the Shiv Sena.

Sharma, an IB officer, was locked up inside the Mohd. Habib Hall on Wednesday by the students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) when he was investigating the arrest of Mobin Ahmad, a student of AMU and a resident of the Hall. Mobin Ahmad was picked by a team of Agra police from the gate of the Hall on September 3. According to the police, Ahmad has confessed that he supplied detonators to those who were behind the bomb blasts which rocked UP on August 14.

The police maintain that Sharma was beaten up by the students when he was investigating into the matter further. But when you talk to the students, you get to hear another side altogether. “It is a case of falsely implicating an innocent individual. We do not disagree that the IB officials might have been pushed and shoved by the students. But we have not `brutally’ hurt him,”says a student. Sharma had accepted at a press conference, in the presence of the District Magistrate and the Vice Chancellor of AMU, that Mobin Ahmad is innocent and that he was not saying this under “any pressure”.

Sharma later changed his stand and held the students responsible for his injuries. He lodged a written case against the students in the Civil Lines police station. Sharma has suffered serious injuries in his face. There are deep cut marks on his back besides a broken jaw. When The Indian Express team visited him, he was under sedation and was not in a position to talk.
