MUMBAI, December 19: Colleges across the state are being warned against a “self-made” English lecturer. Sudarshan Kadam – described in a secret circular by the joint director of higher education as tall, thin and dark – made his own graduation certificate.

Currently absconding, Kadam has already taught Shelly, Keats and Shakespeare at four colleges without having passed his MA. His USP, embarrassed principals of colleges where he has served are now telling, is his fluent English and polite manners. The circular says Kadam has served at S B College and Jawhar College in Thane district, BNN College in Bhiwandi and Manthar College affiliated to Pune University.

According to some senior educationists, who had the misfortune of interacting with Kadam, the man was nearly caught in October this year at Bhavan’s college in Mumbai where he had appeared for an interview. But he somehow smelt the trap and managed to escape.

Kadam’s successful teaching trail finally ended when Principal S V Pandit of S B College asked the Pune University to verify his academic qualifications. It turned out that Kadam, a student of English at Pune University, had failed the exams in 1989. He, however, managed to procure a fake graduation certificate and was soon teaching what he could never learn (to the satisfaction of the examiners, at least). Principals have been directed to immediately intimate the nearest police station in case they come across Kadam.

The teaching fraternity in the city is shocked as well as amused by the case. “This is for the first time I have come to know of a professor with a fake degree. I know some teachers who had procured fake caste certificates, but not this!,” commented Principal D B Kadam of Bhavan’s College in Andheri.
