NEW DELHI, February 5: Skipper Ajay Sharma’s 28th hundred, on an uneven track, guided Delhi to a respectable 263 for six at close of the first day of the Ranji Trophy Group B Super League match here today.

While Sharma was the Delhi batting star, Bengal skipper Saurav Ganguly emerged the bowling hero with his medium pace. His dismissal of a well-set Akash Malhotra and Mithun Manhas in the space of 11 deliveries and 35 minutes before close, had the prize wicket Ajay Sharma (101: 282m, 183b, 16×4).

Opener Raman Lamba was trapped lbw by a ball of low bounce. Vijay Dahiya played across to Utpal Chatterjee and Aakash Chopra played on to his wicket.Sharma, who played some delectable drives and cuts, was dropped on 42 by Ajay Verma at long-leg, off Chatterjee.

Despite being hampered by groin trouble, Ganguly put his team back in the game after Sharma and Malhotra had rallied Delhi from 71 for three with a 81-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Ganguly had Manhas trapped leg before and Delhi were once again introuble (160 for five). But Delhi’s depth in batting came to their rescue as Nikhil Chopra (batting 53) helped his captain put on 85 for the sixth wicket. It was during this partnership that several leg before appeals against the Delhi batsmen were turned down and the frustration told on the bowlers, especially Ganguly, who stared at umpire SV Ramani and gesticulated towards his teammates in the pavilion about the umpire’s decision. He even snatched his cap from the umpire at the end of the over.

Ajay Sharma reached his hundred with a boundary off Ganguly with a fine on-drive but fell soon after that.
